Children's Cancer Foundation welcomes timetable
for the Centre of Excellence in Paediatrics in Policy Address
17 Jan 2013, Hong Kong The Children's Cancer Foundation welcomes the Government’s decision to “pursue actively the construction of the Centre of Excellence in Paediatrics (CEP) ” mentioned in the Policy Address. We are pleased that a timetable has been set for the funding and construction, and completion of the CEP at Kai Tak by 2018.
As the Children's Cancer Foundation initiated this project with the government in 2005, and represents the largest patient group to be served in the centre, we would comment further:
1) Governance model of the centre: This is unclear at present. We advocate that it should be multipartite, and include all stakeholders, including the HA, both medical teaching schools, private sector medical professionals, patients, parents, and NGOs who provide professional psychosocial and other important services not provided by the government.
2) Resources for Paediatrics: We are aware that while the public healthcare system faces a shortage of staff, we hope that the government will now give greater consideration to prioritizing the allocation of resources to paediatrics in order to meet the anticipated demand for services at the CEP within the timetable it has set.
The Children's Cancer Foundation would like to see a positive result achieved in the coming Legislative Council Panel on Health Services on 21 Jan.
